Competitions aside, we've been a bit light on detail about what's going on at Zimki HQ recently. Firstly, we're obviously working on the next release. It's taken a bit longer than expected (we've packed a lot in) but it's nearly there. We've cut a release candidate which we'll release as soon as it passes our rigourous testing.
If you've read the plan that James posted you'll know that we aim to release Zimki under an open-source license. We could just have dumped a tarball of all the code somewhere and said "run with it" but we didn't think that'd be very fair. This isn't just a marketing gimmick—we really do want people to run and play with the code we're releasing, so we've put a lot of work into making it easier to install without the benefit of our build environment. We're all knee-deep in yak-hairs.
Opensourcing large parts of our core business is a lot of work, but it won't be too long until you'll see fruition of it. In fact, Tom and Ash are just now pushing updates to software we have already released to CPAN and our public Subversion server, and we're expecting to release Dent within a week. Dent is a generic file server with thumbnailing & image-transform capabilities, which stores and serves all the files you upload to Zimki.
